Is Pilates good for lower back pain?

I've had a few conversations with people recently about how Pilates can help with lower back pain so I thought I'd write a blogpost about it!

Lower back pain is something that is becoming more and more common as remote and office jobs are increasing. So often people spend a huge chunk of their day either sat in an office or standing for abnormally long periods of time and these things (which we weren't made for!) can contribute to back pain.

⬇️So how can Pilates help?⬇️

Increases core strength - lots of Pilates exercises involve the core, inparticular the deepest core muscle called the transverse abdominus (what a name I know!😂) This muscles wraps all the way around your middle so keeping this strong is so important to support the lower back. If your core is weak then this can put more strain on your lower back.

Increases lower spine mobility - if you experience lower back pain then keeping this area mobile is again so important. Doing regular pelvic tilts or slow and controlled shoulder bridges can really help to increase the mobility in your lower back.

Strengthens glutes - lower back pain and glute strength go hand in hand and if you were to see a physio about lower back pain then one of the first things they'd check is your glute strength. Keeping your glutes strong creates a stable base around your hips and pelvis which (like the core) supports your lower back, taking the strain off this area. Again, the shoulder bridge is excellent for strengtheing the glutes but also those side-lying clams, lift and lowers and side kick.

Injury prevention - Pilates has been proven to help with injury prevention so if you experience lower back pain, practicing Pilates could prevent this from increasing or prevent further injuries. And if you don't experience lower back pain, Pilates could prevent this from happening in the future!
