The benefits of Pilates for mental health

It's Mental Health Awareness Week so I wanted to talk about how amazing Pilates can be for your mental health. This is one of the main reasons why I love Pilates, not only can you look after yourself physically but you can also use it to take care of your mind too! Here are my top 6 reasons why Pilates is incredible for your mental health:
1. Research has found that Pilates can actually decrease symptoms of mental health conditions. Now I’m not saying Pilates can cure mental health conditions but studies have shown taking part in regular Pilates practice can decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety which I think is amazing!
2. Pilates can be a form of mindfulness when you get into the zone of moving your body focusing on your breathing and the movements - before you know it 30mins have passed and you’ve given your mind a moment of calm whilst looking after your body - what’s better than that?
3. Practicing Pilates can increase self-awareness which can help you understand yourself, your needs and therefore encourages you to take better care of yourself. By taking time out of your week to practice Pilates you’re showing yourself the kindness you deserve and the more you do this the more you’ll realise it’s true!
4. If you go to Pilates classes, you can end up becoming part of an encouraging community and may even make a few friends. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people who also care about looking after themselves can do wonders for your mental health.
5. Practicing regular Pilates and seeing yourself progress can leave you with a sense of accomplishment, boosting your self-confidence and self-esteem. Pilates can make you realise you’re stronger than you think both physically and mentally.
6. Whether you go to classes or practice Pilates at home, it’s a form of self-care and time for yourself. I can’t express how important this is, to give your mind some time to rest, heal, process and relax.
Something I’m really passionate about is mental health and how Pilates can be so beneficial for the mind which is why I incorporate relaxation into all my classes. This is your sign to take some time to look after your mind (and maybe give Pilates a go to help you!)
